What is Acetone

 

Acetone is a chemical that is also sometimes referred to as Propanone. It is a colourless, flammable solvent.

 

Its chemical formula is (CH3)2CO.

 

Acetone is an organic compound that occurs naturally in small amounts in trees, plants and even in fat metabolism in the human body.

 

Acetone Uses

 

Acetone is a solvent, which means it can dissolve other substances. This is why acetone is so widely used as a cleaning substance.

 

The most commonly known use of Acetone is in the cosmetics industry as the main ingredient in nail varnish remover and in the painting & decorating industry as a paint thinner.

 

Acetone is also used as a degreaser or for degumming of machinery, for cleaning the dishes in laboratories, for removing permanent marker, dissolving superglue and can even be found in bath, hair and skin care products.

 

Acetone Benefits

 

Solvents can be used on multiple different surfaces.  Acetone can remove undesirable contaminants from metal, plastic and glass surfaces.

 

It is very cost effective and can be mixed with water.

 

Given that acetone is a chemical, standard safety practices should be adhered to when using it but acetone has a low toxicity and so is one of the safer chemicals to use.
