Did your New Year's Resolution involve getting healthier and staying healthier?
This must be one of the top New Year's resolutions!
One of the best ways to keep this resolution may be to watch what you are eating and eat healthy food.
What better way to do this than to grow your own healthy greens and veg in a greenhouse?
Not only will a greenhouse shelter your plants from the cold and wet conditions but it will shelter you from all the conditions.
Given that a greenhouse will hold the warmth in and that you can regulate the temperature of the glass house it also allows you to grow plants from other climates that may not survive or flourish if they were out in the typical Irish weather.
Maybe you don’t have a garden, worry not!
Growhouses are available for plant protection and improved growth. These are a lot smaller than a greenhouse and they will only shelter your plants but they allow you to plant and grow seedlings.
Greenhouses increase the scope of plants and vegetables that you can grow and January is the perfect time to get planting a few vegetables for the new healthy you!
Some vegetables are quite winter hardy and, from within the safety of a greenhouse, can withstand a touch of frost throughout the colder months. These vegetables can be referred to as ‘cool season’ vegetables.
Generally, the cool season vegetables are root vegetables.
Vegetables that can be planted in January include: Onions, Leeks, Broccoli, Potatoes, Carrots, Aubergine, Cauliflower & Cabbage.
There are some kinds of strawberries, cress, beansprouts and beans that can be sown in January also.
As January is only the beginning of the year, this is a lot to get you started on that new healthy you. These home-grown, fresh vegetables will be a great ingredient in any family dish.
