How were Emergency Fire Signs first introduced
The reason that emergency exit and fire signs first began being introduced around the world is a sad story, which might be expected when the origin is fire!
After multiple tragedies in which people fatally became trapped by deadly flames and toxic smoke and fumes, from around 1890, governments worldwide began introducing legal requirements that emergency signage must be prominently displayed.
These signs are to keep people safe.
Who should use Fire Signs
In Ireland every employer must identify hazards, assess risks and have written risk assessments. They must ensure the safety, health and welfare of their employees. All landlords, private and social housing, must also adhere to the same guidelines.
These rules and guidelines are laid out under section 19 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and section 11 of the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2009

.
The Signs are only part of the fire safety plan but what they do is keep a level of awareness in people. Although all new employees and tenants should be taught the fire safety procedures when they begin employment or tenancy just having these signs around often settles into peoples subconscious which will be very useful in an emergency situation.
